What is a Cenote?

The cenote is a natural pit or sinkhole that forms when limestone bedrock collapses, and groundwater opens. Common geological types in low-altitude areas like coastlines, islands, and platforms formed by post-Paleozoic limestones with relatively less soil development include similar rock-sided sinkholes-such as cenotes.
