Discover Mexican Culture: Fun & Easy Ways to Explore

When talking about Mexico, then it can’t be possible not to mention its rich culture and traditions. From the joyous festivals to yummy cuisines - the Mexican culture is a celebration of color and diversity.

Every city is the product of its history the same is true with Mexico. To know Mexico, it is crucial to know the mestizaje. Instead of eradicating one culture and triumphing over the other, the clash of two distinct cultures during the conquest produced a harmonious blend of indigenous Mexican traditions, including the Mayan culture in the Yucatan and the European Catholicism brought by the Spaniards. Many of Mexico's current issues can be explained by this ongoing tugging from the past and pushing from the present.

5 must know ways of Mexico

1. Visit the San Juan Chamula church located in Chiapas, Mexico, is a fascinating blend of Catholic and indigenous Tzotzil traditions. It was built in 1522. From the outside, it appears like a typical colonial-style church, but inside, it is unlike any other. There are no pews, and the floor is covered with pine needles, candles, and offerings. Worshippers perform unique rituals that mix Catholic saints with Mayan ceremonies, including animal sacrifices and healing prayers. Photography is strictly prohibited inside to respect sacred practices. This mystical church provides a deep insight into the syncretic spirituality of the Tzotzil Maya people, making it a must-visit cultural site.

2. Mexican Cuisine is special because of its bold flavors, rich history, and diverse ingredients. The main base of this cuisine is Corn. Rooted in indigenous traditions and Spanish influences, it features staples like corn, beans, and chili peppers. Dishes such as tacos, tamales, mole, and enchiladas showcase vibrant spices, fresh herbs, and unique cooking techniques.

Mexican food is also deeply tied to culture, with meals often serving as a way to bring families together. From street food to gourmet dishes, every region offers its own specialties. Recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage, Mexican cuisine is a celebration of flavor, tradition, and culinary artistry.

3. Enjoy Marchais Another component of Mexico's Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity is mariachi music. Mariachis are a must for a true Mexican celebration! Songs about Mexico, romance, or even resentment can all be found in Mariachi music. It is played by artists wearing charro costumes who play trumpets and string instruments. They sing and perform in a very distinctive way, particularly when they yell, "ay, ay, ay, ay!"

In the evening, visit Mexico City's Plaza Garibaldi to take in mariachi music. Visit Tenampa Salon for tequila and mezcal drinks and live mariachi performances. Restaurante Arroyo is a more family-friendly destination to visit during the day. During Mexican lunchtime, which runs from 3 to 5:30 p.m., they include live mariachis, which are best savored with barbacoa, their main course.

4. Drink tequila in tequila Taking the Tequila Express and visiting Tequila in Jalisco is a popular Mexican ritual that is a must-do for both young and old. From the city of Guadalajara, two distinct trains leave for La Rojeña by Jose Cuervo and Casa Herradura, two of Mexico's largest and oldest distilleries.

You can drink as much tequila as you want when traveling by train, but don't go overboard because there will be plenty more to do and drink when you get there!

One can play Loteria, a popular Mexican bingo-like game, throughout the two-hour train ride. You will be welcomed with mariachis and music upon arrival, followed by a tour of the distilleries and agave fields.

5. Day of the Dead- Celebrate Dia de Muertos Although Day of the Dead is observed all across Mexico, Patzcuaro, in the state of Michoacan, has one of the largest and most customary celebrations. Families visit their loved ones' graves on the evening of November 1st, lavishly decorating them with food, papel picado, and cempasúchil arches. In order to navigate to the island of Janitzio, where an all-night vigil is held in the cemetery, indigenous people congregate around the lake in their canoes with a solitary candle lit.

Visitors are welcome to visit the graves, but they should remain a respectful distance from the celebrants. You never know, you might make friends with locals and be asked to participate. Even those who live in homes with dirt floors will offer you their tortilla, rice, and beans because Mexicans love to share their celebrations with others.

How to Book Affordable Flight Tickets?
